Typical Applications
- Access Control
Used for office entry, staff identification, residential access, and restricted-area permissions when supported by the installed reader system. - Hotel Key Cards
Used for guest rooms, elevators, staff areas, and facility access in compatible hotel lock systems. - Membership and Loyalty
Used by clubs, gyms, retailers, and service providers to identify members or customer accounts. - Campus Systems
Used for student identification, library access, dormitory entry, attendance, and campus services. - Closed-Loop Stored-Value Systems
Used in private payment or stored-value environments when the card, reader, terminal software, and backend account platform are configured together.
Which MIFARE Chip Fits Your System?
| Chip Option | Main Difference | Suitable Use |
|---|---|---|
| MIFARE Classic 1K | Common 13.56 MHz card with 1K memory | Existing access control, membership, loyalty, and hotel systems |
| MIFARE Classic 4K | Larger memory than Classic 1K | Systems requiring more sector-based memory |
| MIFARE Ultralight | Lower-memory limited-use chip | Visitor cards, event passes, simple tickets, and basic identification |
| MIFARE Ultralight C | Limited-use chip with stronger authentication than basic Ultralight | Short-term credentials and controlled-use applications |
| MIFARE DESFire 2K/4K/8K | Multi-application chip family with stronger security features | Campus, hotel, high-security access, and multi-service systems |
Choose the chip according to your existing reader, software platform, memory requirement, data format, and security level.
A 13.56 MHz MIFARE card is not automatically compatible with every 13.56 MHz reader. The chip family and data structure must match the target system.
MIFARE Card vs 125 kHz Proximity Card
| Comparison Point | MIFARE Card | 125 kHz Proximity Card |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency | 13.56 MHz HF | 125 kHz LF |
| Common Technology | MIFARE Classic, Ultralight, DESFire | EM4100, TK4100, HID-style proximity formats |
| Memory | Depends on chip type | Often ID-number based |
| Typical Use | Access, hotel, campus, membership, closed-loop systems | Basic door access and attendance systems |
| Compatibility | Requires 13.56 MHz MIFARE reader support | Requires 125 kHz reader support |
| Interchangeability | Not interchangeable with 125 kHz cards | Not interchangeable with MIFARE systems |
Choose a MIFARE card only if your reader and software support the required 13.56 MHz chip family.
If your system uses 125 kHz proximity readers, a MIFARE card will usually not work.
How a Hotel Uses MIFARE Key Cards
In a hotel lock system, the required MIFARE chip is selected according to the lock encoder and hotel management software.
The card can be printed with the hotel logo, room-card design, serial number, QR code, or guest-facing artwork.
When a guest checks in, the front desk writes room access data to the card using the hotel encoder. The card may then be used for room access, elevator permissions, or selected facility areas, depending on the system configuration.
Before bulk production, sample cards should be tested with the hotel lock, encoder, management software, and card printer.
